The Conversation.

Today was her one month wedding anniversary. She glanced at her reflection in the six foot long mirror that adorned the bedroom wall. She looked beautiful. Her hair was tied up in a French roll and saree perfectly draped. She smiled at her reflection and knew she looked stunning.

Suddenly, her eyes were covered by someone’s palms. He whispered slowly while taking his hands away from her eyes, “Keep your eyes closed”. There stood a well built man. He was wearing a jet black three button suit with nicely gelled hair.

“What is it?” she asked, surprised. “Something that will make you smile” he beamed and handed over a golden box beautifully wrapped with red lace. She opened it carefully and gasped, “Whoa! This rock is huge!”

“Do you like it?” he smiled. “Of course, but..” she suddenly stopped. “But what?” he asked “The ring looks expensive.” she said softly.

“Nothing is expensive for me and anything, just anything for a smile from you.” he boasted. She fell silent. She knew that was the truth. He was one of the youngest businessmen in the country who had struggled his way right to the top. But it was not the complete truth. These things hardly mattered to her. The jewellery, the luxury, the parties, nothing were important.

She looked in his eyes. “Yes, you are right, you can afford anything. But I don’t need a diamond ring to make me smile”. He looked shocked. “Don’t you like the ring? We will get it exchanged!” he added hurriedly. “No, you don’t get it.” she sighed. He repeated, “No! You don’t get it. I am just proving my love!” She said, “You don’t have to prove anything, you just have to love.” To which he retorted, “But I always thought women are happiest when they get gifts, especially diamonds!” He was confused as he couldn’t understand her thoughts.

“Yes she is, but she is happier when her man looks at her and says she is beautiful. She is happy when he holds her hand and says you are my life. When he listens to her inner thoughts, shares his dreams with her. That’s what a woman really wants. It’s not necessary to present an expensive gift to make her smile. The deed can be done even with a simple silver ring and expressing your love truly.” She was still staring into his eyes.

He got up suddenly, which made her anxious. “I am sorry. I didn’t mean to hurt you and I really liked the ring. I just blurted out what I have been feeling since we got married.” He kept moving away till he reached the door.

She finally asked worriedly, “Where are you going?”  He looked serious. Turning back he calmly replied, “To get you the simple silver ring you mentioned and then I’ll do exactly what you asked me to do.”

Both of them burst out laughing.

And..she took everything...

The bags were packed. Everything was set. She had been packing for almost a week now. Looking at her bags, no one could have believed the fact that she stayed in a hostel. It was her last day in Mumbai.

She was not only leaving the city she loved, she was leaving much more than that. She was leaving her college days, the known roads, her work place, her hostel room, her favorite shopping places, her frequently visited restaurants, her hangout locations, the known smiles, the friendly waves, the no reason high fives, the warm hugs, just everything!

She was leaving seven years of all this, but most importantly she was leaving her friends, who stood by her through thick and thin.

She stood on the platform waiting for the train to move, her face showcased a mix of all emotions. A bit of excitement, a bit of nervousness, a bit of tension...but a small tinge of happiness sparkled in her eyes. Why? Because she finally had after a year's effort secured admission for post graduation in her desired university abroad.

Heaps of portfolio work, lots of documentation, trips to educational departments and banks. The tension of the loan and the visa. It was a never ending process. What mattered was, that she was getting an inch closer to her dream now.

But was she really leaving everything. No, I dont think so. She was carrying much more than what she left behind. A sense of independence she felt after she stepped into the city alone, the bond she made with people around, the important principles in life that the city taught her. She was taking hearts of friends along with her, she was taking blessings and of course a thing that no one could snatch away from her.... ever lasting memories.

- Dedicated to my dearest friend Kajal.

When in your Arms...

When in your arms
I get a feeling of security
Its you who possesses me
Its you who owns me

When in your arms
There's no sense of time
The clock just stops
There is no past, no future
Only this one moment

When in your arms
I feel the world close to my heart
The feeling of being held
of being loved in just one gesture

When in your arms
All I feel is your warmth
your heartbeats, your fragrance
Just want to absorb it all.
That you shall not let go of me
Protect me, shield me forever.
That I am your angel and
you are my wings.

A reason to Live

Give me a reason to smile,
Give me a reason to laugh,
Give me a reason to love,
A reason to live.
as my only smile was you,
those silly things you did,
those stupid faces you made me laugh with.
as you were the one who taught me to live,
to feel, to experience the purity of love.
All the moments with you are mere
memories for others.
But for me, they are the only thing I have been left with.
Give me a reason to love.
A reason to live.
A reason to find the butterfly called hope again.

What If ?

Why dont you laugh till your stomach hurts.
Why are you so rigid.
So calculative of what you say and what you dont....loosen up.
What if.....today's your last day.

Why dont you express your love more often.
Why dont you kiss your wife before you leave for work,
and hug your children when you are back.
A simple gesture of love, a small pat on your friend's back
is all what it takes.
Fill your life with love.
What if.....today's your last day.

Why dont you forgive quickly
Why do you hold grudges unnecessarily.
Forgive and forget.
What if.....today's your last day.

Miss You MAA.

Never saw your face, but somehow I know
You must have been beautiful.
The words which came out of your lips,
must have been soft and sweet.
Yours gestures must have been warm.
Your touch so gentle....
Till a time I never knew this kind of love existed...
But now when I look around and my eyes dont find you..
I know I miss you Maa.
I'm blessed with so much love and affection,
but nothing compared to what you could have showered upon me
I miss your warm hugs.
I miss your scoldings.
Whenever I get a medal,
I miss the twinkle in your eyes.
Whenever Im down with failure,
I miss that pat on my back which says
Its gonna be allrite.
Somehow I just cant stop wishing about you being there with me today.
What I really miss is probably the pride on your face...
of being my Mother...

PAIN

How is it possible that you feel a pain
without actually getting physically hurt..
Pain is such an emotion,
where you loose your senses.
You become numb.
Shattered, helpless.
You try hard to rise up and get back on your feet
Try harder to even find some hope.
But the pain is strong.
It makes you fall on your knees.
You have nothing else but loneliness.
You try hard to act brave,
but all in vain
Something within is so painful
that it feels as if some hundred pins are piercing
through your heart.
People say time is the only solution.
I want to believe it.
I try and put my belief to test
and leave everything on time, the best healer.

Breakaway

I was thinking about a special song , a song that describes me.
Heard this song by Kelly Clarkson some days back...
and I instantly fell in love with it.
I want to dedicate this song to myself and to those
who come from small towns and have big dreams.

Grew up in a small town
And when the rain would fall down
I'd just stare out my window

Dreaming of what could be
And if I'd end up happy
I would pray

Trying hard to reach out
But when I'd try to speak out
Felt like no one could hear me

Wanted to belong here
But something felt so wrong here
So I prayed
I could breakaway

I'll spread my wings and I'll learn how to fly
I'll do what it takes till I touch the sky
And I'll make a wish, take a chance, make a change
And breakaway

Out of the darkness and into the sun
But I won't forget all the ones that I loved
I'll take a risk, take a chance, make a change
And breakaway

Wanna feel the warm breeze
Sleep under a palm tree
Feel the rush of the ocean

Get onboard a fast train
Travel on a jet plane, far away
And breakaway

I'll spread my wings and I'll learn how to fly
I'll do what it takes 'til I touch the sky
And I'll make a wish, take a chance, make a change
And breakaway

Out of the darkness and into the sun
I won't forget all the ones that I loved
I gotta take a risk, take a chance, make a change
And breakaway

Buildings with a hundred floors
Swinging 'round revolving doors
Maybe I don't know where they'll take me but
Gotta keep moving on, moving on
Fly away, breakaway

I'll spread my wings and I'll learn how to fly
Though it's not easy to tell you goodbye
I gotta take a risk, take a chance, make a change
And breakaway

Out of the darkness and into the sun
But I won't forget the place I come from
I gotta take a risk, take a chance, make a change
And breakaway, breakaway, breakaway

Magnetic Pull

Suddenly everyone seems happy
Everything starts feeling awesome
Every bit is beautiful
The mornings, the afternoons,
the eves and the nights.
The air smells so sweet
Everything around is pure joy
Its just you and your magnetic pull.

Its an unknown feeling.
I loose my mind
I loose my senses
My heart, my thoughts.
Its just you and your magnetic pull.

I know I have to wake up
But I refuse!
I m enjoying being flown away.
I want to stop,
But its just you and your magnetic pull.

Painful Love

For me, you were the only one.
for  you, I was one of them.

I loved you with all my soul
and you did'nt even bother to care.

I proved my love again and again,
what I got in return was suffering and pain.

I know you hurt me, yet I could'nt stop loving you,
and you were unaware, lost in your ignorance.

I was there waiting for you, hoping you would return,
but you did not even care to turn.

Its now, that I know I have to move ahead.
Its painful to the core, but I learnt more..

Perspective

It technically means a particular attitude towards or way of regarding something; a point of view’.
Let me give an example in simple words. If A has a particular opinion about an issue, B has a totally different opinion. Now if you have to judge who is right and who is wrong how will you judge? Your decision will be based on your experiences, background, teachings, surroundings, beliefs, values and the culture around you.
For many of us it is difficult to understand the view point of another person. This is because our logic and the above mentioned factors don’t allow our brain to understand it. But if we have to accept a person, it should be with his individual perspective.
To explain this better, I would like to share a story told by Mr. Devdutta Pattanaik, a well known mythologist.
This is when Alexander the great had already set his mighty foot in India. One day he met a Monk who was meditating. Alexander wondered and asked what he was doing.
The monk slowly opened his eyes, smiled and said “I m experiencing nothingness”. Now he looked carefully at Alexander and asked “What are you doing”? To this the king replied, “I m conquering the whole world”. After this, both just looked at each other and smiled.
Now if we think about this story a little deeply, this may be called diverse viewpoints. What made Alexander decide what his aim in life was? He was taught about Homer’s Iliad and was told stories about the mighty warrior Achilles. He was also taught to be heroic, aim for impossible things, win them, not to be monotonous and mediocre. This is because as per Greek mythology, there is only one life and that life had to be spectacular.

Now on the other hand, the Monk had heard stories of king Bharat. This king once climbed the  peak of Mount Meru, which is considered the highest and the centre of the earth in Hindu mythology. King Bharat was carrying a flag and wanted to mark the peak, so that everyone would know that he was the first to climb the mighty mountain. But when he reached the peak, he saw countless flags already waving there. His ego was crushed, his victory felt meaningless. The monk learnt from this that everything is temporary and nothing lasts forever.

He was living in a land where the concept of rebirth was deeply believed in, that life was not just lived once, but is actually a cycle and if you have to break the cycle, you need to enlighten yourself and surrender to the almighty.
So when Alexander heard the monk’s answer, he must have thought what a waste of a life and smiled. Similarly the monk must have thought whats the use of conquering, when nothing lasts forever.

FIRST TIME

Why is the first time so important? Why is it so memorable?
A few of the the first times that I will always recall..

First time I rode a bicycle.
Feeling of persistence, perseverance.. (did'nt know the meaning then)

First time I spoke in front of a crowd,
Feeling of being shit scared... (actually).

First time I wore a saree,
Feeling of irritation..

First time I got my pay,
Feeling of independence and achievement..

First time I experienced snow,
Feeling of pure joy..

First time I gained strength from praying,
Feeling of my inner god..

First time I refused getting bullied and actually hit the person (Mind you it was the last time...)
Feeling of fearlessness

First time I saw my drawings turn into real structures,
Feeling the joy of creation

There are so many such first times in all our lives..
They could relate to any of our feelings of anger, love, happiness, joy, excitement, fear..
Let’s take out some time to remember and cherish each of those FIRST TIMES...

Wait

Why am I waiting,
What am I waiting for,
Who am I waiting for,
All these years, through summers, winters and the rains, I'm still waiting.
Am I waiting to complete my incompleteness,
Am I waiting to lighten the darkness,
Am I waiting to fill in the space where there is vacuum.
After all these questions..one thing remains a mystery.
What if my wait doesn't fulfill my expectations..
But then, hope is all that I have, one of my prized possessions.
I believe that waiting for anything makes you realize the importance of your wait.

Language of EYES

They say what cant be said by words, can be expressed through eyes.
whats the language of eyes..
There are all kinds of eyes..
There are eyes full of hope,
Some full of questions wanting to pierce through you.
There are shy eyes, some mischievous.
There are smiling eyes or some even full of disappointments.
The same set of eyes can speak so much.
When they look down, you know they are guilty,
When they are full of tears but refuse to let them free, you know they are hiding something sad.
When they look through the corners, you know they are interested in you.
and..when they look directly into yours you know they love you.
To feel all this, you need to open your eyes and observe and not just see....

QUESTIONS

I often ask myself these questions,
Who am I? What is my purpose?
But every time all I get is ...one more question.
Confusion and chaos.....
Some questions are not meant to be answered I guess!
But I still do not give up.
I m stubborn want my answers,
I ask who can answer me...
I hear a little voice inside me saying “Only God”
My next question...Where do I find god,
Do I chant, or do I meditate
The voice inside me is no longer little,
It has raised...”God’s inside you, and nowhere else”

SHARING A SMILE

I was nine and had changed my school. The previous school was in my hometown Mhaisal.I was basically shy and change of school had made me a bit more conscious. After some days, I succeeded in making some friends.

The class teacher was supposed to teach all subjects,in the primary section. So according to our receptive capacity and mood he would take subjects.Whenever he felt that we have become dull, he would encourage students to do somethings like singing, dancing, acting or even imitating.

It was rather a dull day,and it was the last class, school would be over in some time.No one was in the mood for studies. So he decided to have our entertainment hour.

He first called one of the girls, she was a very good singer and to top it she had the confidence of singing in front of the whole class. She happily agreed and sang some songs.

I was unaware that I was the next target.I totally froze when sir pointed his finger towards me.I was so stunned that my bench mate had to push me out of my seat.

Finally I gathered up some courage and went in front of the class.I absolutely did not have any idea about what would I do next. The teacher, again reminded me that I was there to entertain the class.

I stood there for a long time, thinking should I sing, should I act.I did not want my class mates to make fun of me.what should I do,by which I will not look stupid.I did not even look up at all those eyes, some of which who were smirking, some shocked, some sympathetic.

Finally, looking at my petrified state, he told me to go back. When I went home, I told everything to Maa(My mother). She asked me why I did not sing. I told her that I did not have a great voice and that I was scared that everyone would make fun of me.

I still remember her words. She said God has not given everything to everyone. so learn to appreciate what he has given you. If you think you cant sing, do what ever which makes you happy, share a joke, share a smile, make people laugh, anything.

Those words did not make any immediate impact on me,but after so many years I understood the meaning of those words. In your own small way try sharing happiness, make people smile around you, give a bit of hope everyday and it can make a huge difference in some one's life.

BURDEN.

I wanted to share this story with all of you.

In ancient India, the gurukul system of education was followed.Once two shishya's (disciples)finished their course of study in there guru's ashram (i.e gurukul which means the house of the the teacher, where the disciples were supposed to stay till they finished their studies).
Before taking leave, they asked blessings from their guru. The guru blessed them, but also reminded them of their vows (they had to observe bramhachaarya i.e bachelorhood. That meant they would never get married, not get close to any woman,or even think of her. After seeking the guru's blessings both the shishya's started their journey. After walking for a while they reached a stream .When they got ready to cross it,they saw a beautiful young girl trying to cross the stream.
One of the shishya's offered her help, and the girl agreed happily. The shishya picked her in his arms and crossed the stream, dropped her at the other end.She thanked him and left.
Looking at all this the other shishya got very upset and furious. He felt that the first shishya broke his vow.He kept on thinking over and over again about the incident. They finally reached their place, and started arranging their beds.
The shishya, till now had kept himself calm ,but couldn't control himself and he shot the question at the first shishya," How could you pick the girl up?How could you break the promise you gave our guru just some time ago?"
To this the first shishya replied,"I agree that by picking her i broke my promise, but my first duty at that time was to help the girl, and I could'nt do it without touching her.I dropped her as soon I crossed the stream.I know I have sinned. But you have sinned more than me my brother,as you have carried her burden till here."
The second shishya did not understand this.Instead of asking for an apology why was the shishya blaming him.The first shishya spoke again," As soon as I crossed the stream I dropped her and left her physically as well as mentally. And you my brother did not even touch her ,but yet kept on thinking about her and the incident again and again,by which you have carried her burden till here."
